What Is An Oxygen Cylinder & Why Do We Use It?

An Oxygen Cylinder is essentially a large metal vessel that stores under pressure (compressed oxygen) and transport oxygen in a pressurized form, typically for medical, industrial, or recreational purposes. When it is used in medical facilities or at home, they help to deliver supplemental oxygen to patients who cannot get the needed amount of oxygen or have a lung condition or difficulty breathing or other respiratory problems.

What are the types of oxygen tanks?

The mainly 3 types of oxygen tanks include:

  • Compressed Oxygen -  The atmospheric air which is all the people breathe every day consists of about 21% oxygen. The rest gas is nitrogen, along with small amounts of other gases. Compressed oxygen gas is at least 99% oxygen. A compressed oxygen tank has a gauge on the top of the tank that tells you how much amount of gas is in the tank. A regulator allows you compressed oxygen inhale when you breathe and stops as you exhale.
  • Liquid Oxygen - A liquid oxygen tank carries 100% oxygen in a cold liquid. Oxygen turns into a liquid at -182.8 degrees Celsius (-297 degrees Fahrenheit). Manufacturers compress it into a liquid oxygen tank. When liquid oxygen release from the tank, it turns into gas. You must be very careful from liquid oxygen when you around it. Accidental exposure can cause cryogenic burns (a burn from extremely cold temperatures) or frostbite, So do not go too close to Oxygen Cylinder.
  • Oxygen Concentrator - Oxygen concentrators create purified air by pulling atmospheric air around you, separating and compressing the oxygen and removing the nitrogen. They run from electricity — you can either plug them into a wall or use batteries. Unlike compressed oxygen or liquid oxygen, you don’t have to refill a it to get oxygen.

Components of an Oxygen Cylinder Use

  • Cylinder Body: It is made from high-strength materials such as aluminum, iron or steel to withstand high pressure.
  • Valve and Regulator: Regulator control the oxygen flow & reduce the high pressure of the stored oxygen to a usable level.
  • Pressure Gauge: Indicates the pressure inside the cylinder, helping users to know how much amount of oxygen is left inside the Oxygen tank.
  • Flow Meter: To adjust and control the rate of oxygen flow.

How long will you need to use oxygen tanks?

  • It depends on why you need to use an oxygen cylinder at home.
  • If you are short-term patient then you need an oxygen tank until you recover.
  • If you or your patient has a long-lasting condition, you may need to use an oxygen tank for the rest of your life. Our professionals will work with you to adjust to living with an oxygen tank so it doesn’t interfere with your normal daily activities, including work, bathing, exercising and traveling, etc.
